Open Dental stays your practice management system and the place your claims live. Claims Intelligence reads what Open Dental already knows through Open Dental's API and shows it back to you organized by payer and procedure code. It does not create claims in Open Dental, it does not send claims anywhere on its own, and by default it writes nothing to your ledger.
We issue an API key, you add it in Open Dental under the API setup, and your eConnector, which Open Dental's API already routes through, serves the requests. Nothing is installed on your server or your workstations, and there is no direct database connection, no VPN and no data migration. You can disable the key from inside Open Dental at any time.
A nightly job reads Open Dental claim procedures that are marked Received, which means your team has already entered the EOB. For each line it stores the fee billed, insurance paid, write-off and deductible applied, with the procedure code and the carrier. The first run reads up to 300 patients picked from your schedule and ledger activity, and each night after that reads another 300. In a busy office that is a small slice of your patients, so many received claim lines are never read. Treat the payer views as a sample of your claims, not a full ledger. (Better: fix the selection to take past activity only, ordered by DateCP, before the page promises growth.)
The analytics group those lines by carrier and CDT code: what each plan actually pays on a D0120 or a D2740, how much you write off to each PPO, and which payers pay noticeably less than your best-paying plan on the same code. Separately, the insurance A/R view reads Open Dental's outstanding claims, and collections include the insurance payments recorded in Open Dental. The payer and fee views are paused for all accounts right now while we finish them. The nightly collection keeps running, so your history is there when they come back.
Claim drafting (837D drafts built from completed procedures, for your staff to review) and ERA posting to Open Dental claimprocs are built, opt-in and not tied to any one PMS, but neither has run in production on an Open Dental office yet. Denial classification with appeal drafts is built and currently paused for all accounts, along with the payer views. All of these stay off unless we set them up with you.
Setup is an API key, not a project. We issue the key, you enable the API in Open Dental and add it, and you confirm the eConnector is running and the server stays on overnight, because the claim read happens at night. The analytics only cover claims your team has marked received in Open Dental, so if EOBs sit unentered for weeks, those lines show up weeks later. Claims Intelligence is $299.99/month. The Insurance Suite, which pairs it with insurance verification, is $399.99/month. The payer and fee views are paused for all accounts right now, so ask us for the current status before you buy for this feature. Every plan has a 14-day trial, runs month to month and comes with a BAA.
Open Dental has every number in it, and its PPO Write-offs report already totals write-offs by carrier. What it doesn't lay out for you is what each carrier actually paid per CDT code, side by side, with the plans that pay well below your best payer for the same code flagged. We read the received claim lines out of Open Dental every night so you don't have to rebuild that in a spreadsheet. Those payer and fee views are paused for all accounts while we finish them, so ask us where they stand.
Yes, by carrier. Write-off is one of the four values stored for each received claim line, along with fee billed, insurance paid and deductible applied, so write-offs are totaled by carrier, and for each code you see billed versus what each payer allowed and paid. We don't currently show write-off broken out by procedure code. It only sees what your team posted in Open Dental, so write-offs entered as lump adjustments instead of on the claim won't show up here.
That is what it's built for. For each code you see your billed fee next to what each payer allowed and paid, from your own adjudicated claims rather than a survey, with the payers that allow well below your best-paying plan flagged. It does not compare against your contracted fee schedule. Apart from a before-and-after check on codes you've renegotiated, it does not chart trends over time. These views are paused for all accounts right now, so check with us before you plan a negotiation around them.
Yes, read-only, in a separate insurance A/R view. Insurance A/R comes from the outstanding claims in Open Dental, and insurance collections come from the insurance payments recorded there. We don't change either one. Your team still works the claims in Open Dental.
No. Nothing here submits claims automatically, and no claim is ever created inside Open Dental. We have built claim drafting, which turns completed procedures into 837D drafts for your staff to review before anything goes out, but it has not been used on an Open Dental office in production yet. It's opt-in, and sending is separately switched off until we turn it on with you. If you want a mature claim-sending workflow on day one, keep using what you use today.
Denial classification (reading the payer's reason codes) and drafting appeals or corrected claims are built, but they are paused for all accounts right now, Claims Intelligence can build a follow-up list from Open Dental claim lines that came back paying $0 and draft appeal letters for staff review. It is paused for all accounts right now along with the payer views, so it has not run on Open Dental denials in production. Reading the payer's reason codes only works on claims sent through our own claim-drafting rail, which no Open Dental office uses yet. We'd rather tell you that now than have you find out in month two.
It can, but it hasn't been proven on a live Open Dental install. ERA posting writes insurance paid, write-off and deductible applied onto the matching claim procedure, refuses lines it can't match exactly or that are already attached to a check, and reads each line back to confirm Open Dental accepted it. It's off by default. If you want it, we turn it on with you and check the first postings together before anyone relies on it.
The first run reads the last 90 days of received claims for your 300 most recently active patients. After that, each night reads the last two weeks for up to 300 recently active patients, so in a busy office the picture builds up going forward rather than filling in the past. Each night covers up to 300 patients, so in a busy office it holds a sample of your received claims rather than all of them. Ask us what coverage looks like for an office your size before relying on it for a negotiation. A payer only shows up once it has at least three received claim lines, and a payer-and-code pair once it has at least two. A payer is flagged as underpaying on a code only with at least three lines and an allowed amount more than 15% below your best payer.
No direct connection. Everything goes through Open Dental's API with a key you can disable in Open Dental at any time. Some reports run read-only queries through that same API. Nothing is installed on your server beyond the eConnector you already run. We sign a BAA and encrypt PHI at the field level at rest.
If you run Open Dental and want to know which payers are actually paying you, and on which codes, this reads your received claims every night and organizes them by carrier and procedure code, with write-offs totaled by carrier. We collect these claim lines every night for connected Open Dental offices today. The payer and fee views are paused for all accounts while we finish them, so ask us for the current status before you buy for this feature. Claim drafting for staff review and ERA posting are built but have not been run on an Open Dental office yet, and denial and appeal drafting is paused along with the payer views.

You keep Open Dental. Every night we read a batch of received claim lines from Open Dental (up to 300 patients per night).: fee billed, insurance paid, write-off and deductible applied, per procedure code and per carrier. The analytics built on them show what each plan pays per code, your write-offs by carrier, and which payers allow noticeably less than your best-paying plan for the same code. We collect these claim lines every night for connected Open Dental offices today. The payer and fee views are paused for all accounts while we finish them, so ask us for the current status before you buy for this feature. Everything here is read-only. Claim drafting, denial work and ERA posting are built but have not run in production on an Open Dental office, and we say exactly where each one stands below.
